underscores agriculture as a vital potential
area for economic development
Muvi TV,
February 25, 2011
The
Consumer Unit and Trust Society (CUTS) International
has underscored agriculture as a vital potential
area for economic development especially for
developing countries.
This is
contained in findings of a study looking at
agriculture and trade in selected African countries
that CUTS is working on with other international
organizations such as the World Trade Organizations
(WTO).
And
Officiating at the launch of this study in Geneva
Switzerland, WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said
the study was timely and gives the wealth to work
with especially in the stalled negotiation on
agriculture under the Doha Development Agenda (DDA).
He said
agriculture needs to become more efficient and to
attain that specialization should be discovered.
And
commenting on the Geneva developments CUTS
international Zambia acting country coordinator
Simon Ng’ona who attended the study report
dissemination has told MUVI TV business; that the
Zambian Agriculture sector suffers from lack of
competitiveness.
Mr. Ng’ona
has said the agriculture sector is vital for the
livelihood of most Zambia which he says has a
comparative advantage in the region despite being
landlocked.
He
stressed the need for the country to instead have
complimenting policies that could lead to high
productivity and promote trade.
